Kekova & the Sunken City

Kekova is an area of incredible beauty where history mingles with nature. The turquoise waters sheltered by Kekova Island, Simena village topped with the remains of a Byzantine fort, sarcophagi protruding from shallow waters and littered on the hillside and of course the Sunken City itself. It is called the Sunken City as the historical buildings on Kekova Island sank into the water as a result of various earthquakes many years ago. Staircases descend into the sea, whole rooms lie submerged whilst others stand proud in the shallow water, a testament to a civilization past. Tour itinerary: Drive to Ücağiz where you take a glass bottomed boat to explore the ruins of the sunken city, Kekova Island and Simena. Lunch is served on board and there are numerous opportunities for swimming.

Myra & The Church of Saint Nicholas

A popular destination with visitors is Demre (Kale) where the famous rock tombs of Myra are to be found. Myra was an important city in the Lycian Federation and it is documented that St. Paul visited the city in 60 B.C. on his way to Rome. Much of the ancient city remains buried under the modern town but the theatre and rock tombs have been excavated. The step cliff to the west of the theatre is honeycombed with closely packed tombs of various form and size, though the majority are of the house type. Many of them are quite elaborate and some are decorated with colour reliefs.

Saklikent Gorge, Tlos & Yakapark

The day commences with a visit to the truly spectacular Saklikent Gorge, the longest and deepest in Turkey, an experience not to be missed. Walk along the floor of the canyon and marvel at the extraordinary limestone walls soaring above you. Tour itinerary: Start approx 9.20am from Kalkan and go straight to Saklikent Gorge. Then visit Yakapark at the foot of the White Mountain for lunch. After lunch you will visit the ancient Lycian city of Tlos with its remarkable rock tombs.

Fethiye Market, Ghost Town of Kaya Koy & Olu Deniz

We leave Kalkan at 9am (Tuesday’s) and travel approx 1 hour 15 mins to our first destination Fethiye market. This is a great experience and one you’ll sure to enjoy visiting the largest market in the area, bring plenty of Turkish lira and get ready to barter for the best price. From the Market we visit the Fethiye Gold centre and then on to the deserted Ghost Village of Kaya Koy where we take lunch. After exploring the village we head to the famous beach at Olu Deniz for swimming & relaxing.

Pinar & Xanthos

According to ancient accounts Pinara was founded by colonists from Xanthos and was in existence at the time of Troy. Remote, tranquil and almost untouched by modern tourism Pinara has a strange mystical beauty about it. With the pigeon hole tombs behind the city and the heart shaped Aphrodite Temple, Pinara is believed to have been the beauty centre of Lycia. On seeing the numerous pigeon hole tombs cut in the vast east facing cliff of the acropolis, it is easy to understand why Pilinius knicknamed the Pinarians ‘bird-men’, for if they could not fly how else could they have cut the tombs? A trip to Pinara can be taken in isolation or combined with a visit to either Letoon or Xanthos.

Horse Riding

Ever dreamt of galloping along a deserted sandy beach with the wind in your hair? Well, here is your chance. Great experience on the sands of the endless Patara National Park ,which is situated beside the Xanthos River. Morning and afternoon rides usually available.

Meis Island known as Castellorizo by the Greeks is only 20 minutes away from Kas town. Meis has remained untouched by tourism still protecting its charm and beauty of a small Greek Island. Tours to the Island are available almost everyday from Kas.

Mahmut’s Restaurant (Trout Farm) Islamlar

Mahmut’s restaurant; hidden away in the hills behind Kalkan, in the traditional Turkish village of Islamlar (about 20 mins drive away). A trout farm by tradition, however Mahmut also specialises in other Turkish dishes such as meze and lamb. This is a lovely area to visit and usually a few degrees cooler during summer.
